Why not just any safety app
Most safety apps expose you the second someone looks at your screen or your app drawer. Saathi can present itself as a mundane utility. The safety dashboard does not exist as far as anyone else is concerned until your safe word is typed in.
Internet available: photos, audio clips and map links route straight into your Telegram channels. Internet gone: the app drops to raw carrier SMS with your GPS coordinates to your trusted contacts. You do not choose, and you do not notice — it just switches.
Being followed on the way home, or a cab taking an unusual route, is not an ambulance problem — it is a decision problem. Gemini Flash returns concrete physical steps in order of priority. If the AI is unreachable or rate-limited, built-in offline protocols serve instantly instead.
Start to finish
Four onboarding screens: your name, your emergency contacts, your safe word, and optionally your Telegram bot credentials.

Must do before installing
Because Saathi is not on the Play Store, Google's Play Protect may show a "harmful app blocked" or "unsafe app" warning. That is not a virus alert — it is how Android treats every app installed outside the store. Follow the steps, install, then turn protection back on.

Before you install
Not if you have a disguise mode on. The app presents as an ordinary everyday screen and its real dashboard only appears after your safe word is entered. Without the safe word there is nothing on screen to find.
The core alert does. With no data connection, SOS sends your GPS coordinates by carrier SMS to your trusted contacts, and a banner tells you you're in SMS-only mode. Telegram delivery, photo and audio uploads and the Gemini advisor need data.
Telegram bot channels let evidence — location links, snapshots, audio, suspect files — reach several people at once, on a channel you control, without you needing to run a server. You set up the bot credentials during onboarding.
On your phone first, in a Room SQLite database with AES-256 GCM encrypted preferences. Cloud backup to Supabase is asynchronous and optional.

Yes, through an Android foreground service. On Android 11 and above you do need to set location permission to "Allow all the time" yourself in system settings — Android does not allow the app to request it directly.
